“Excellent Matsuzaka beef yakiniku style”

I had dinner with a friend at M No Yakiniku, which specialized in Matsuzaka beef grilled yakiniku style over an open grill. Matsuzaka beef is one of three Japanese premium wagyu beef together with Kobe beef but as it is less well known, it tends to be much less expensive. I like yakiniku style coo...king for premium wagyu beef since the excess fat can drip down the open grill so you end up with the very tender beef but without an excess layer of fatty oil on it. The restaurant's menu gives choices to order one of the numerous different cuts a la carte, or to order various platters or combination courses. My friend and I opted for a deluxe platter that offers 6 different cuts of Matsuzaka beef - from lean to very fatty. We also ordered one single serving of the hotpot garlic rice, and a Japanese tea each. Our meal was delicious - the beef is so flavourful and tender! The hotpot garlic rice was also very good with bits of fatty beef in it to enhance flavour. However, I should have pressed down on the rice hard with a spoon when the dish was served to get some of the rice at the bottom of the claypot to become crunchy - will remember next time. Service was excellent and we had no difficulty ordering in English with the staff. Our total bill was about 8000 yen per person, which seemed a very reasonable price for a premium wagyu beef dinner (a Kobe beef dinner would likely be much more than 10000 yen each).

Although the place is a little small, the food quality really rises above all of the restaurants' flaws. It's definitely not cheap though, so come prepared with your wallet.

“Excellent Matsusaka Beef Yakiniku”

On the recommendation of my hotel in Umeda, I went to M's Yakiniku Umeda Fukushima, which is part of a well known chain of restaurants specializing in Matsusaka beef, one of the big three wagyu beef of Japan together with its more famous cousin the Kobe beef. Premium wagyu is most often cooked tepp...anyaki style but I find it a bit too oily in taste when it cooks sitting in its own oil so I prefer shabu shabu to let the water wash away some of the oil or yankiniku to let some of the oil drip down through the grill. My welcome to the restaurant was wonderful as after being quickly shown to my semi-private booth with a screen separating me from the next booth, I found at my table a hand-written card from the manager in english welcoming me to the restaurant. Each booth had its own gas fired grill and there is a nice degree of privacy from the screen separating my booth from the next. I ordered the premium course menu for 7,800 yen as I wanted to try Matsusaka beef in as many different ways as possible. The course menu started with a small salad, three kinds of kimchi and some marinated Matsusaka beef in a small dish with a very cute bird shaped cover - the Japanese excel so in presentation as well as taste of their food! Then it proceeded to thin slices of beef covered in salt and leeks which I grilled very quickly since it was so thin. A piece of pure fat is provided with which one can rub the grill to grease it so that the meat will not stick. Next, I was served two pieces of beef sushi, one of lean beef and the other of marbled beef - interesting but I definitely preferred the beef grilled. Then I was presented with the main event which is two thick pieces each of four different cuts of Matsusaka beef. The menu helpfullly provides a diagram showing which part of the cow each cut comes from, as well as a detailed description of the quality of each of the 12 cuts of beef that the restaurant serves. After the beef, the course menu provides a choice of hot or cold noodle or rice. I opted for the garlic rice with bits of meat served and cooked in a very hot bowl and it was very delicious - definitely a recommend. Finally the course menu ends with dessert of two slices of banana pound cake drizzled with chocolate sauce and served with vanilla ice cream. All the food was delicious and despite the small size of each piece of meat, its high fat content made it a very filling meal. Definitely quality over quantity. When I finished my meal and exited the restaurant, staff quickly ran out the door and stood outside the restaurant and bowed to thank me for patronizing the restaurant - truly over the top but typical Japanese service! I loved my Matsusaka beef yakiniku dinner and thought the price was reasonable for the great quality of the beef. I heartily recommend the restaurant and that you try Matsusaka beef in place of its more famous cousin as I think you will find the same great taste and melt in your mouth tenderness, but perhaps for a lower price.

“Best dinner on our trip so far”

Fresh, tasty and beautifully displayed. We had the middle sized menu, which was just the right amount for us. Did not leave us hungry nor too full. After eating so much food on this trip, where everyting is mixed together in a bowl, I really enjoyed to be able to taste these rich flavours separately.... The garlic rice was so tasty with meat in it as well. It could be too salty for someone, who is used to less salt though. The staff was very professional and everything ran smoothly. This was not the busiest evening at the restaurant and we got a table without a reservation.

“Best dinner during our Japan holiday”

We took the special course menu which had nice appetizers but the main dish were the 4 different kinds of Matsusaka beef which you grilled yourself. Best meat during our trip and we e.g. had Kobe rib and sirloin in a top restaurant in Kyoto. Maboroshi was the most tender but they were all delicious.... nice fresh lemon grass ice cream as desert. saved out trip to Osaka.
