“Food as Art . Not cheap but exquisite .”
On the recommendation of a Japanese friend my wife and I visited Abbesses in Gion and opted for the 10,000 yen fixed dinner meals . Every course is presented by the waiter / waitress with an explanation of the ingredients and methods of cooking .They are clearly intensely proud of their hard work .... It is food as art , exquisite in every detail .The balance of tastes and combination of flavours is superb . This is well outside my usual cuisine target but I do not regret the cost or the experience in the slightest . Coupled with an evening stroll around Gion it makes a special visit to Kyoto even more special .

Part of me wants to keep this a secret. I've found some lovely restaurants on Trip Advisor but this is the first time I've been compelled to write a review. We were walking in the rain in Gion District, on our own for dinner (no guide) and would have passed this by. Searched for "close to me" and fo...und this beautiful place in a little alleyway 10 yards from where we were standing. Part of our group had already walked past the small sign. Words cannot adequately describe the experience.

“French cuisine of Kyoto-style implied”
A high standed French restaurant that hidden in a 3rd floor of a secluded ally can get absolutely the strength of a Michelin star. When you Just see arranged fine, suitable hand chopsticks on the table, you will know exactly what is used in a complex salad with twenty something Kyoto vegetable. ...It is thinking of convenience of taster. The first salad spend different texture performance and cutting method, seasoning inside five different ways, like spring kimono walking, layer upon layer, weaving, dyeing embroidered sleeves. ( Interestingly, in Beijing, Shanghai, senior western restaurants to see if the knife, fork and chopsticks on the table,You can think of it is; because it is not good to use a knife and fork, so just put chopsticks )

“Sensational affordable fine dining ”
My husband and I speak no Japanese so it was with quite a feeling of excitement that we entered this well hidden bistro on the 3rd floor set back from the street. The waiter made an outstanding effort to communicate through a few words and gestures which added to the theatricality of the night. The ...food was sensational. We had a degustation which was extremely reasonable considering the number of courses and the quality of ingredients. A visual feast too which I hope I have captured in these photos. Not all of the courses are photographed.( I can't figure out how to put more than 10 photos on this site)The night was divine and one we will treasure forever
