This is the best sushi experience that we've had so far. All the different fish were excellent, especially the Fatty Tuna and the Squid. The rice is cooked slightly differently to other place, in that the chef uses vinegar instead of sugar, goes very well with the fish in our opinion. The service w...as very impressive too. Both the Chef and the Sous Chef were friendly and accommodating even though we couldnt speak English. The chef was also able to explain in English the type of fish we are eating, which helps a lot. The atmosphere was very cosy, only 7 seats at the bar, and a small table for families. Customers can be as talkative as they want to, and the chef & sous chef will entertain, or keep to themselves, and they would not disturb you. Many traditional restaurants in Japan takes booking only from hotels, as foreigners can just not show up, and restaurants cannot hold anyone responsible for that, they can hold hotels responsible (payment) if booking is via hotel. We went there a few days before, spoke to the sous chef, and convince him to allow us to pay in advance instead (as we are not staying at a hotel), and they also help to accommodate that. Perhaps a solution for others who are struggling to book. Overall, an excellent experience, and I would highly recommend the restaurant to anyone looking to experience great sushi!

Sushi was good but nowhere near as good as other similarly priced restaurants. Not what I expected. I also got severe food poisoning that night (that was my only meal of the day). I couldn’t believe getting food poisoning in Japan, but this restaurant made it possible...

“Good, not great sushi”
Had the omakase dinner - some 18 pieces of sushi including tamago as dessert. The restaurant is small - 7 places at the counter, one four-top table. We had Amex Concierge make a reservation for us at short notice. Google Maps locates the place precisely - like most addresses in Gion, impossible to f...ind without such an aid for a non-local. His rice has a distinct flavor and feel. No sugar and malt vinegar is used to make the rice, which makes it drier than most other sushi places. Works well with lighter fish, feels heavy and leaden with the mackerel and abalone that bring up the rear of the meal. Felt too dry for my taste. Service was friendly. Chef didn’t speak much English so no interaction with him. Overall not worth the 15,000 yen per head sticker - feels over-rated at 2 stars.

“1 star Michelin Restaurant but just so so ”
Came here due to its 1 star. Omakase lunch sitting on a table due to counter was fully booked. Food is ok but not really 1 star. Service is quite good though

“you can't be so rude”
We went directly to Matsumoto to make a reservation. In Kyoto maling a reservation for a restaurant is the most difficult task. Anyway, we arrive at the place, a girl says in poor English that reservations can be taken only through Hotel consierge and shuts the door. what if I am not staying at a ho...tel? The attitude was terrible, in Italy the customer is considered the most valuable asset, in some Japanese restaurants like this one, getting a table looks like you are being priviledged, which something really annoying to me
