We stopped here for lunch before checking into our hotel a few doors away, the Yumekaiyu. Besides Japanese seafood, Kaiseki, ph 9.5 Onsens, we also make a point of chasing down good Italian restaurants in Japan. I must say this is the best we’ve tried so far. It was a Monday and the restaurant front... room facing the park was full. The owner met us and graciously explained that the restaurant only accepts cash payment. We were then led to a well decorated room behind with a view of the kitchen staff working. We chose the menu that has a base charge; includes starters and choice of 2 mains to be shared with price adders depending of the item. We also added a pasta 3rd course. The starters were a collection of local vegetables with different Japanese dressings. Vegetables were very fresh and the dressings tasty. The grilled octopus was perfect, tasty n not chewy/tough. The grilled beef is local before it goes across the bridge and gets branded as Kobe beef! It’s not streaky wagyu. It was perfectly grilled, good texture n tasty. The pasta was sardines with cabbage. Al dente n tasty. Generous portion. The 2 deserts/coffee was an extra comprising of a sherbet with strawberry, ginger, basaltic, lemon grass sauce and another desert of white chocolate meringue strawberry, which the owner chef insisted had to be eaten in sequence followed by black coffee to experience the taste explosion. Chef trained/worked in Bologna. Very friendly and chatty. Will definitely come again.

“Surpassed expectations! ”
Came to Sumoto to escape the city heat for a few days. Stumbled across this Italian place next to the hotel. It looked nice and we expected a decent meal. Our expectations where more than surpassed! Two of us went a la carte, and two chose one of the three offered set menus. The set meat menu (degu...stazione) started of with assorted starters from local produce. Delicious grilled mini eggplant, espresso flavored potatoes and sautéed mushrooms where a few of my personal favorites. A mix of par boiled baby vegetables followed, consisting of 14+ vegetables, topped with lettuce and a sprinkle of fried anchovies. Charcoal grilled Kobe beef (~80% of which is initially bred on Awaji) was served as the next course. Tender and bursting with flavor, and even elevated further by house made condiments such as onion powder, Parmesan cream as well as onion and mustard marmalade. No salt had been added, and none was needed(!). The blueberry risotto was savory and balanced between the heavy Parmesan and “acidic freshness” of the blueberry. The meal ended with a nice creme catalana and a local apricot sorbet. We had a decent bottle of Chianti to go along with the meal. Our host spoke decent English and was very knowledgeable regarding the preparations and origin of ingredients.

“Fine dining Italian-Japan fusion”
Wow. Such an incredible place. The owner is a very passionate chef, who goes everyday at 4 AM to get the best fresh ingredients from Awaji. Either from the mountains or from the market. The detail to each plate is stunning. He uses a lot of different ingredients for each plate. We took the menu whic...h had 10 small courses and were so blown away we came back 2 more times. A great marriage between Japanese and Italian food, which I didn't think would be possible :-) Thanks to you and your wife for your friendliness and thorough explanations of everything. Grazie Mille !!!

“The best Italian ever! 過去最高のイタリアンかも”
After a long drive, we stopped in Awajishima for dinner. It was a coincidence we chose this restaurant, but how lucky we were we had! I have dined at many Italian restaurants around the globe, but I'd say this was one of the best, if not the best Italian I ever had. The appetizer selection was very... unique. About 10 different small dishes were brought to our table, including carrot mousse, espresso-braised sweet potato etc. We loved them all! 2 different types of bread were served with locally grown and produced olive oil and rapeseed oil. Both felt and tasted special. I had mushroom risotto as the main dish. It was creamy but rice al dente, full of flavour. Even though I was already full, I "had to" try their tiramisu. It was light but still rich and had a nice balance of the espresso's bitterness with the mascarpone's sweetness. Very special dinner at a very special place. Thank you. I'd definitely love to come back!
