"Otaru Canal" is a water channel built in 1923 to directly ship packages to around warehouses. Before it was built, people delivered packages by first, using a big ship and second, discharging them by a small ship. Otaru Canal primarily developed as a gateway of Hokkaido's development by these methods. However, as the number of packages increased, the water channel that enables small ships to directly enter around the warehouses was built. This channel became Otaru Canal. In the postwar era, infrastructure of the port's wharf led the channel to finish its general role and after controversy, a half width of it was landfilled in 1986. In the present time, stone warehouses along the canal have been born again as restaurants with 63 gas lamps placed on the walking path.
