Niigata City Art Museum is a cultural facility that opened its doors in October 1985, and is situated in 5191-9 Nishiohatacho, Chuo-ku, Niigata. To "see, create, and tell" are the three pillars on which the museum rests. The nearby Nishi Ohata Park and the museum building were designed by local architect Kunio Maekawa, for which he was awarded the BCS Award in 1986. It took over the 3320 exhibits (as of March 2012) of the closed "BSN Niigata Art Museum". Collection exhibitions, temporary exhibitions and exhibitions approaching something new are held here, and to this day many artists, including Yayoi Kusama, have been displayed. In April 2013, a museum shop selling art-related goods has opened too.
