"Itsukushima shrine" is located in Itsukushima (Miyajima) in Hatsukaichi city of Hiroshima prefecture. It was registered as UNESCO's cultural property in 1996. A grand scale main sanctuary stands in the water as though it is floating over the ocean during high tide. In particular, the "otorii" gate build 200m off the precinct of the shrine is known as the largest wooden torii in Japan. Current shrine was built by Taira no Kiyomori during Heian period, and the main sanctuary, worshipping hall, and the corridor are designated as national treasury. Heike scriptures dedicated by the Taira clan as well as many art crafts that are designated as national treasures and important cultural assets are archived here. The shrine is open to the public from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm (closes at 5:00 pm in winter).
