Sapporo Odori / Tanukikoji Restaurant Guide

Odori Park is a narrow park that runs east to west through the central area of Chuo Ward, Sapporo, Hokkaido. This special park spans approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 mi) from Odori Nishi 1-chome to Odori Nishi 12-chome and covers an area of approximately 7.8 hectares. It was designated as one of the top 100 best scenic spots by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in 1991.After entering the Meiji Period, plans were drawn up to divide the city of Sapporo up into sections somewhat similar to a chessboard, and a large-scale fire prevention zone was built. This divides the city into two sections: the administrative quarter in the north, and the business and residential areas in the south. During WWII, this area was used to grow potatoes in an effort for food security, but after the war it was slowly returned to normal. In early June, this becomes the site of the YOSAKOI Soran Festival, with approximately 40,000 participants who dance their way through the park. During the Sapporo Odori Beer Garden, which is held in July and August, the park becomes a spectacular epitome of a summery vibe, with about 13,000 chairs lined up and over 400,000 liters of beer consumed. The park is its busiest in February during the Sapporo Snow Festival, when it fills with sightseers from Japan and all over the world.
