Odawara / Minamiashigara Restaurant Guide

Odawara City has been a central city in the south-west of Kanagawa prefecture and - because of its 18 stations - is a city with great access and became a commuting area for Tokyo & Yokohama.Under the rule of the Hojo family it became castle town during the Sengoku era and in the Edo period it flourished as the biggest post town along the 53 stations of the Tokaido Highway.Every year on the 3rd of May, when the "Odawara Hojo Godai Festival" is celebrated, there is a big event to remind people of the prosperity of the ancient times.Odawara castle has been declared a historic landmark and the park near the castle has been selected as one of the "100 best cherry blossom places in Japan". Many tourists visit every year.It produced many writers and scholars from the Meiji period to the Showa period and the area from Saikachikouji street to the west exit of Odawara station has been maintained as the "Promenade of Hakushu Nursery Rhymes", where people can walk in the footsteps of Hakushu Kitahara.A number of local industries, including lantern making, lacquer ware and cast metal, thrive due to the resources of good quality water and fishing ports, and "Odawara kamaboko" is known nationwide in conjunction with abundant catches from the sea.
