Yokohama China Town Restaurant Guide

Yokohama Chinatown is located in the Yamashita district of Naka Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. This area has a history of about 150 years, starting as a settlement built for foreigners from the end of the Tokugawa period through the Meiji period. The area suffered repeated calamities during the First Sino-Japanese War, the Great Kanto Earthquake, and the Second Sino-Japanese War, resulting in cycles of decline and revival. Presently, it is a sightseeing spot which attracts up to 23,000,000 locals and visitors (both domestic and international) annually, and is on the way to becoming the largest chinatown in East Asia. There are said to be approximately 620 shops in Yokohama Chinatown (226 of which are Chinese restaurants). The area is also distinctive for its many repeat visitors who come to enjoy the cuisine and the shopping, which includes not only Cantonese, Shanghai, Szechuan, and Beijing cuisines, but also foodstuffs such as Chinese teas and general merchandise from all over Asia. At the time of the Spring Festival, or the Chinese New Year—which falls sometime during January or February each year—a spectacular number of firecrackers are set off in Yokohama Chinatown. Chinese lion dancing troupes perform on the streets to the sounds of cymbals, large drums, and gongs, and the entire area becomes even more lively than usual.
