Yokohama Motomachi / Yamashita Park Restaurant Guide

Motomachi is a shopping street that symbolizes Yokohama. Situated in Naka Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, this sight-seeing spot is a stone's throw from Yokohama Chinatown and Yamashita Park. Motomachi's history begins in 1859 (Ansei 6), when Yokohama Port was opened and residents of Yokohama village were forced to relocate to Motomura. They changed the name of the village from Motomura to Yokohama Motomachi at this time.Later, during the Meiji period, it was re-named Motomachi, and thrived as a shopping street aimed at foreigners living in the Yamate residential area.Scenes depicting florists, tailor stores, hat shops, furniture stores, bakeries, and cafes appear in a novel written by Tanizaki Jun'ichiro during the early Taisho period. During the 1970s, in response to "New Traditional", a fashion style that emerged from Kobe and that was popular at the time, a style known as "Hama Traditional" (Yokohama traditional) came into being and gave birth to a unique culture. In October of each year, a food event known as the "Food Fair" takes place along Motomachi Craftsmanship Street. During this popular event, dishes from famous restaurants in Motomachi can be enjoyed at cheap prices ranging from ¥200 to ¥900.
