Yokohama Station Restaurant Guide

Yokohama Station is located in the Nishi Ward in the central part of Yokohama. This major terminal station is serviced by lines from six different companies, including JR, private lines, and subway lines. As of 2014, Yokohama Station is the largest station in Japan in terms of the number of different company lines servicing the one station. In view of its scale and user-friendliness, it has been designated as one of the "Best 100 stations in the Kanto region" by the the Ministry of Transport (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism). One section of present-day Yokohama Station had been originally under water until the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Landfill operations commenced soon after the start of the Meiji period and railway tracks were laid. On October 14th, 1872 (Meiji 5), the first railroad in Japan, stretching between Shimbashi and Yokohama (present day Sakuragicho Station), was opened to traffic. As a result, this day is celebrated as "Railway Day." The station boasts many styles and varieties of ekiben (lunch boxes bought at the station). "Shumai Bento" first appeared in 1954 (Showa 29), produced and sold by "Kiyoken", a Chinatown restaurant that has its main branch nearby the station. The product turned into a long selling item and is still much loved today.
