Sakai Restaurant Guide

Sakai City, the second-largest district in Osaka, is located in the south-central part of the city.Humans has lived here since the Paleolithic age, and many ancient pieces of earthenware and stone tools have been excavated here.1700 years ago, when a ruler passed away, an enormous tomb was made by piling up earth and stone into a tall mound. Those tombs were called "kofun" (megalithic tombs), and the "Mozu kofungun" (Mozu cluster of tombs) in Sakai is representative of such tomb clusters in Japan. Also, dating from the Muromachi period (1333-1573), Sakai flourished as a commercial and trading city, and was called the "Venice of the East."Sakai was the originator of many things, including such things as guns, bicycles and incense, as well as a private railway line (the Hankai tramway), and many other things which are indispensable to our lives today.Ever since the knives used to chop tobacco leaves were first made here, cutlery has become a renowned product, and the craft continues to be preserved at the highest standards even today.Sakai produces ninety percent of the professional-quality knives that are used by chefs and others. Also, Sakai is known as the birthplace of the great master of the tea ceremony, Sen no Rikyu.
