Asakusabashi Restaurant Guide

The area around the Asakusa bridge grew into a town for commoners in the Edo era.Edodori street in front of the station was one of the five "highways" that connected the capital with the other provinces of feudal Japan, called the Oshu Kaido. From the Asakusa bridge spanning the Kanda river, to the Kuramaebashi intersection is roughly 700m of streets of Edodori street wholesalers. Popular with shops that originally dealt in toys and dolls, it is now full of shops that sell accessories, beads, and other handicrafts - the kinds of items only found in a merchant's quarter like the Taito ward. The area around Asakusa bridge has 26 historical landmarks, and one can stroll around enjoying them via a woodblock print map from the Edo period. 200 meters back from the confluence of the Kanda and Sumida rivers is the Yanagibashi area, a former red light district that still has many historical fine restaurants and small eateries. From docks for covered pleasure boats to fireworks festivals, there are many spots here brimming with the spirit of old Edo. Miyakoshi Sushi was established here in 1807 (Bunka year 5) steeped in Edo traditions. From the Meiji era onwards it has held many elegant Western-style restaurants and romantic Taisho cafes, as well as Showa era bars with a downtown feeling, so there are many ways to enjoy a visit here.
