Jiyugaoka Restaurant Guide

Jiyugaoka, located in Meguro, Tokyo, always ranks highly as a desirable neighborhood to live. Once filled with bamboo groves, this area rapidly began development after the opening of the Toyoko Line in 1927.The neighborhood is named after Jiyugaoka Academy, which opened the same year.Thereafter, the area transformed into an upscale residential area where cultured people and celebrities live. However, Kumano Shrine retains a portion of the old bamboo groves. The Megami Festival (Goddess Festival), held every year by the Jiyugaoka Shopping District Promotion Association, is one of the biggest of its kind in Japan. As the biggest festival in Jiyugaoka, it hosts a variety of performances and events.Since 2000, it has changed its image slightly; gaining acceptance and popularity from women as a cute and likable location.Jiyugaoka is also known for its sweets. The first Mont Blanc confectionery in Japan opened here in 1933 (Showa year 8), and the chestnut and cream dessert sold was said to be aimed at high class, cultured customers. These days it is the home of the popular "Sweets Forest".
