Kagurazaka Restaurant Guide

From the intersection of Okubodori street and Wasedadori street to the hillside Sotoboridori street is Kagurazaka. The area around each intersection is still referred to in terms of "uphill" and "downhill". It flourished as a red light district during the Taisho period, and there are many alleys characteristic of a pleasure quarters left over from that time that you can't find anywhere else. These days only five luxurious, traditional Japanese restaurants remain, and these are the only locations where you can dine in the company of one of the region's roughly 25 geisha. Halfway up the hill is the Buddhist Zenkoku-ji temple, which has watched over Kagurazaka's many changes throughout the ages. Besides Zenkaku-ji there are many other temples to see here, including Wakamiya-Hachimangu shrine and Akagi-jinja shrine. At the annual summer "Kagurazaka Festival" in honor of the guardian god of Buddhism many fine Chinese lantern plants are on sale in the marketplace and there is festive street dancing - both characteristic of the summer season. Along the main street there are many elegant alleys dotted with high class restaurants. One can also take a scenic stroll here along the Kanda river. In recent years the many convenience stores and high rise apartment complexes have cost the area some of its familiar charm, but it remains a place to experience the color and liveliness of old Edo.
