Kanda Restaurant Guide

Speaking of Kanda, it's also home to antique bookshops. The reason for the multitude of old bookstores in the area between Surugadai intersection and Sendaimae intersection along Seikokudori road are the many universities and medical institutions in the Jinbocho and west Kanda districts. In 2001 the area was chosen by the Ministry of the Environment as one of the "100 Most Fragrant Landscapes" due to the scent of the old books wafting through. There are roughly 200 shops altogether, and 110 of them are antique bookstores, and one third of the entire city's collection of historical tomes is located here - said to be the largest in the world. The Book City Kanda Festival is held here every autumn. Furthermore, the red brick Mansei bridge was completed here in 1912 (Meiji year 45), and the scenic red brick arches March Ecute Kanda Manseibashi and old Manseibashi Station provide a vivid reminder of the past, drawing many cultured people to visit to experience Kanda's unique charms. Designated an institution for local activities and commerce, it is a popular site for strolls through town, and many workshops and music events are held here. The Kanda Festival held each year at Kanda shrine has a history of over 1300 years and the gods of the ancient temple are said to watch over all of the city's inhabitants, from generals to peasants.
