Nerima is in the verdant residential area located in western Tokyo.It is also a place which formed the foundation of Japanese animation, where both Japan's first color full-feature animation "The Tale of the White Serpent", and the world's first weekly serialized animation "Astro Boy" were produced.Also, there are many animation productions related to "Neon Genesis Evangelion," and "Pocket Monsters." The Seibu Ikebukuro Line runs through the area. The area along the tracks is noted for the legendary Tokiwa-so apartment block that once stood here and and its deep connection with some of Japan's best known cartoonists, such as Reiji Matsumoto and Fujio Akatsuka. The Chihiro Museum Tokyo is the world's first museum dedicated to picture books. With a focus on the works of Chihiro Iwasaki, the museum displays original copies of picture books from around the world. In 1995, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi took up a position as the second director of the museum.Nerima daikon radishes, grown in the loam of the Kanto region, are a specialty product of this area.Nerima daikon are good for making takuan and other styles of pickles. As a hot variety, they are also delicious served as grated daikon.Shiriboso Daikon are good for making takuan, and the akizumari variety is good for making asazuke style pickles.
