Nippori Restaurant Guide

Nippori is an area in the southwestern part of Arakawa Ward, in the shitamachi (downtown) area of Tokyo. The Yanaka Cemetery, a popular spot for its for its cherry blossoms, runs along the eastern side of the station. Yanaka Ginza, an olden style shopping street, is also found in this area.Walk along the shopping street from the station, one comes to the Yuyakedandan (sunset steps). The steps offer wonderful views of the sunset over shitamachi and are often featured in magazines. The steps are also sometimes playfully called "Yuyake nyan nyan," after the many cats that can be found there. The shopping street still has the flavor of the old shitamachi, with businesses that have stood here since olden times and an increasing number of shops and studios run by young creatives who have renovated old buildings. On the southeast side of the station is the Nippori haberdashery district, with approximately 70 shops selling fabrics and haberdashery or accessory items. The area outside the station was once a wholesaler's area for cheap candy (dagashi) manufacturers, commonly known as "Dagashiya Yokocho." In 2008, it was closed, due to the redevelopment of the area and the opening of the Nippori-Toneri Liner route. These days, there are two dagashi stores located inside the Station Garden Tower, which is directly linked to the station. They are visited by many customers looking for the nostalgia of old.Since 2009, the area outside the station has been called "Sunmark City."
