Ryogoku Restaurant Guide

Ryogoku is the area in Tokyo's Sumida and Chuo Wards surrounding Ryogoku Bridge.Until 1686, the Sumida River was the border between Shimosa Province and Musashi Province. Since Ohashi Bridge (Ryogoku Bridge) connected both provinces, the area came to be called "Ryogoku" (Both Provinces). The west end of Ryogoku Bridge (Higashi-Nihonbashi in Chuo Ward) had Ryogoku Hirokoji street, one of Edo's Big Three Hirokoji main streets. It developed as an amusement quarter with entertainment halls and circus tents. The scene of pleasure boats on a summer evening around Ryogoku Bridge is depicted in woodblock prints.Part of Lord Kira's estate still remains. This is one place where the Ako Incident (forty-seven ronin) occurred from 1701.Yoshimune, the 8th Tokugawa shogun, started the Ryogoku fireworks to mourn those who died from famine or an epidemic and to pray to eradicate illness. Today, we still hear shouts of "Kagiya!" and "Tamaya!" during the fireworks. They were names of fireworks makers who shot the fireworks.Ryogoku is synonymous with the Kokugikan sumo arena. The current Kokugikan is the second one built in Ryogoku. It was completed in 1984.Besides grand sumo tournaments and other sumo events, pro wrestling and robot competitions are also held at the Kokugikan. The immediate area has many chanko-nabe (sumo stew) restaurants. Popular among sumo fans and tourists alike.
