Akasaka Restaurant Guide

Akasaka in Tokyo's Minato ward. From the late 1950s to the 1970s, it was a high class shopping district, complete with fancy restaurants and cabarets that stood shoulder to shoulder with Ginza.Since those days the district flourished. It is home to many artists and cultured residents, as well as many Western businesses and embassy employees. In front of the current Akasaka station is TBS. Events are often held there that draw people from all over the country in its Akasaka Sacas building. In 2007 Tokyo Midtown opened here. It boasts the largest building in the area, the Midtown Tower, with 5 stories underground and 54 stories above ground, at a height of 248 meters. A variety of establishments, including shops, offices, and hotels, are located within. And the neighboring Hiyama Park provides a broad green space.Inside is also the Suntory Art Gallery, and combined with the new National Art Gallery that opened at the same time, this district is a must-see for art lovers. The Hie Shrine stands as an oasis of quiet amidst the modern buildings of Akasaka, the site of one of Japan's three great festivals, the Sannou Festival. A procession of 500 people spanning 300 meters parade through the city every other year, providing a glimpse back in time to traditional Tokyo.
