“Well deserving of its Michelin Bib recognition for anago”

This was actually our 2nd anago lunch for the day following a dismal meal at another restaurant on Miyajima as we had initially wanted something quick sans long queues...but the phrase "good things come to those who wait" rings too true when it comes to a satisfying bowl of anago don. Beyond the q...ueue outside, be prepared to wait for an additional 15 mins once you secure your seat, as the food is cooked to order. The anago (which is from seawater vs unagi, which is freshwater eel) at Fujitaya is cooked to perfection and just lightly brushed with sweet sauce, letting the meat really speak for itself. If you are staying on the island and are no rush to catch a ferry, aim for a late lunch around 2pm or so (they are open till 4pm) when the queues have died down.

Used this place for after 2-3 hours hiking from Mt.Misen towards Daishoin. It took longer than I thought and as my T-shirts was soaking wet and exhausted, ...so hesitated to enter into but when I opened the door of the restaurant was not crowded becoz it was 2:00 pm. I sat at the end of counter and ordered Anago-Don (steamed sea eel - JPY2,500). It was very delicious and I recommend this place to anyone who wants to eat proper Anago-Don in Miyajima.

“Fantastic Unagi Don ( or BBQ conger eel)”

We had lunch here on a day trip to Miyajima from Hiroshima. We did find the restaurant mid morning and put our name down on the booking list - we were the only non -japanese name! We came back just before 11am when it opens and we were called in when it was our turn. It is charming inside -with a n...umber of low tables so if you have problems sitting on the floor it could be a challenge. There are some normal chairs at one table and at the bar. There is a menu in English available. This restaurant is famous for the grilled eel on rice served with miso, pickled vegetables and green tea - so that is what we ordered. It is great - well worth the trip. The miso had an oyster in it. Conger eel is perfectly cooked as was the rice. The restaurant only takes cash - we thought it was reasonable value.

“Memorable bowl of Unagi Don”

We read about others' comments about waiting, so we got there at 9:30 and were the first group to put our name down. We came back at 10:45 to find out that there were still only 3 names on the list. So, on a Monday morning, the restaurant was not competitive to get in. The tables have tatami-styl...e mats, so do your yoga before coming. There are several items on the menu, but everyone gets their famous unagi-don which is the fresh water eel. Not cheap but highly recommended.

“Full of flavor”

We visit this place to compare with what we just had the day before taking the ferry to Miyajima from another famous anago restaurant. We arrived right after opening time of 11am and there was already a waiting list. We registered our name and the number of person in our group and wait by the side o...f the restaurant. They provide a sheltered waiting area with seats. After about half hour, we were called and ushered in. The restaurant was full. After passing a small garden we were led to the back portion that were tatami floor instead of regular seats. the place was competely empty. We were quite surprised as we wander why they did not fill this part up since there were so many people waiting outside. The meal was serve after about 25 mins of placing the order. Soup taste like dashi clear soup with a scallop. The anago is soft and tasty with the sauce sparingly sprend out on the soft and warm rice. It was so full of flavor and by serving the clear soup, it compliment the main dish very well. I would say they are a nought better. The wait is well worth it. Price wise they are about the same price or slight higher by another Yen300 for some cheaper one. BUT this is 1 Michelin star.
