“Cantonese food amidst historic photos”

This restaurant serves very good Chinese food. The menu has a huge number of offerings. The menu is in Chinese, Japanese, and English, with enough explanation of each item that it’s easy to understand what’s in it. Many photos posted around the restaurant show members of the Imperial Family and othe...r famous Japanese, such as the baseball legend Oh, at the restaurant. The staff can explain who the people in the photos are. For my friends and me, dinner here is too expensive. Lunch isn’t cheap, either. It’s around 1,200 yen to 1,500 yen for most items. When we want to treat ourselves to something special, we come here, rather than going to other places in the same neighborhood where a good lunch is 1,000 yen or less. We generally order noodle dishes. I often get hot and sour noodles, for example. The portion is enormous. The preparation tends to be somewhat bland, though. In fact, whatever I’ve ordered at Hong Kong En, I find that I want to add something from the arrays of condiments on the table, such as hot oil (rai-yu), soy sauce, mustard, or vinegar. After I’ve done that, the food tastes very good. Recently, I had “go-moku chahan” here for the first time. That’s fried rice with various things cooked with it, such as shrimp, Chinese sausage, and chopped vegetables. It was much too salty for me. I ate it, but between then and dinnertime, I drank about a liter of water to dilute the salt in my body. The restaurant looks relatively small, but it’s actually enormous. In addition to seating on the ground floor, there are many tables on the second and third floors, which are reached by an elevator. Regardless of where in the restaurant you ate, you pay at the desk that is near the entrance. The two men who work there are always cheerful and helpful. The wait staff are OK, if perfunctory. The restaurant is a few minutes’ walk from Meguro station. If you’re walking there from the station and the day is clear, stop a moment at the last pedestrian crossing before the restaurant and look in the direction away from the station. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see Mt. Fuji.

“Longtime local Cantonese favorite”

In contrast to the many small (and sometimes dingy) Chinese restaurants you find in Tokyo, this is a more elegant Cantonese restaurant with real linen and attentive service. You'll pay a bit more, but you will get a better value and experience overall. The noodle dishes are especially good!

“Underwhelmed”

This long-standing Chinese restaurant not far from Meguro Station is OK but nothing to rave about and for the price, overvalued. The service is very good. If there were a rating between average and very good, I'de give it that grade.
