“My Go-to sushi restaurant in Arasaka”

4
Reviewed 01/Mar/2020

I have been going to Sharaku Arasaka for 15 years. It is my go-to sushi restaurant after a long day of business meetings and now that I am retired, we returned after a long extended stay in Japan before heading home. I am constantly reminded when we return to this restaurant how fresh they seafood... is versus what we get back in California. The restaurant has been nicely remodeled and with an improved seating arrangement at the bar. I noticed in previous reviews that smoking is allowed after 8pm. Glad we have been visiting Sharaku before the evening smoking ban is lifted on our recent visits. It's a small restaurant and in previous years the smokers did ruin the meals and our experience. We have always dined at the bar and enjoyed engaging with the sushi chefs as they exposed us to more and more types of seafood and side dishes. On this particular visit the sushi standouts for us were the following: 1. Scallops sushi - fresh and sweet flavor 2. Large Octopus - blanched with lemon and ground rock salt 3. Salmon - extremely fresh

“good alternative”

4
Reviewed 15/Mar/2017

My dinner companion, a Japanese sushi snob, was concerned for some reason that the name Sharaku sounded touristy, but had to admit that this was a good alternative to our usual Akasaka-Mitsuke sushi joint, which tends to be crowded and noisy. The atmosphere here is a bit quieter and Ginzaesque, thou...gh still lively. There is no smoking until 8 pm. Prices are reasonable; we were stuffed to the gills and along with a half-bottle of Chablis and a mug of beer, the bill came to about six thousand yen a person. I was most impressed with the house special roll, a harasu (salmon) ikura monstrosity that is very substantial in its half size, at 900 yen, and really tasty, as even my companion, who believes the California roll to be a foreign invention designed to destroy Japanese civilization, had to agree. There is an English menu, and the chefs, who are fairly young, didn't seem to have too much trouble with English, though it's not a place specially geared to foreigners. Our only complaint was that one of our orders was forgotten, and since it was a grilled item that took a while to make, we canceled it when we realized it was never coming.

“Reasonably priced and lively ambience”

This is a good sushi bar for overseas visitors to experience sushi itself and the jazzed up atmosphere which is requisite to hype up your appetite. Have your seat at the bar if you really want to soak up the ambience, look at various kinds of fishes in front of you and simply order what you want to... a sushi chef in front of you who is waiting for your order. Price of sushi inevitably varies from fish to fish, but don't worry as the price information is clear here and quite reasonable.

“Despite the average mark it was enjoyable and good - just not quite 'very good'.”

Wandering the streets of the Akasaka district looking at the many restaurants for a Sushi restaurant we decided on this as the one opposite was full and this had two conveniently empty seats at the counter where we could watch the sushi chef prepare the dishes. The atmosphere was good, the clientel...e mainly Japanese and they were very friendly. We ordered a selection of sushi and sashimi (raw fish). Although I have not got much experience of either dish for comparison purposes, I thought they were good (although I have to say that we had comparable or better sushi later on during my stay in Japan, but nevertheless these were enjoyable). It was also reasonably priced as it came to a little under 6000 yen for two including a couple of beers, so we were happy. As at the time I did not have much experience of sushi for comparison, but as we subsequently found other similar or better places then I guess an average marking would be most accurate. But as average unhelpfully covers anything from just about mediocre to good but not quite very good, then I should stress that we both enjoyed it and would mark it good if we could.
