“Exceptional Tempura and delicious accompaniments”
We found this restaurant while staying at the Marriott Miyako hotel - located in the same skyscraper as this small restaurant (the tallest building in Japan). Our concierge gave us a thick brochure listing a description of all of the numerous restaurants located in the building. there are approx...imately 60 small restaurants are clustered on the 12th through the 14th floor with escalators between them allowing easy movement within the array of restaurants between floors. It's a destination in itself because each of these floors consists solely of restaurants - predominantly Japanese, of course, but also french, italian etc.. Each restaurant has a display window with idealized samples of each dish they serve so you can window shop. We selected this restaurant which was listed as #20 in the brochure (that number is also posted on the front of the actual restaurant - which was helpful because we don't speak Japanese and most of the restaurant names were in Japanese script not English). The menu was pictorial and they were happy to furnish an English version when we requested it. It is rare to find staff in any of these restaurants who speak anything but a few phrases of English but you can order easily by simply pointing to the menu. The brochure description of this particular restaurant was "This establishment founded in Shinjuku, Tokyo in 1924, specializes in Edo-style tempura, made with great expertise. All dishes are based on fresh foods, in season." That caught our eye and we searched for #20 and found it on floor 13f. We were somewhat mystified at the array of accoutrements that arrived with the Tempura but there was an instruction paper telling us what each tiny side dish was (salt, soy, etc) and how to use it with the tempura. We were served a delicious soup and rice along with the tempura. A huge success for our very first meal in Japan. The food was exceptional - savory and delicious.

“Excellent as always”
Marvelously crispy and hot as the food comes fresh from the fryer. And always friendly efficient service. This Harukas branch looks very familiar. As most of them do.
