Sushi Asoh Hiraosansoh

Today we’d lunch in Sushi Aso before catching our flight back home. It’s the best of our 3 sushi meals during our 3-night stay in Fukuoka. When our hotel concierge booked for us, we’re asked to choose from 3 menus (4,000 yen, 6,000 yen and 8,000 yen) and we chose the last one. The restaurant is ...located in a stand alone little building in a quiet residential area. Taxis from Hotel Nikko costed about 1,500 yen. We needed to carry our luggage to walk up some rather steep stairs in other to enter into premises. In the end, it’s worth all the efforts and trouble. The whole meal from start to finish was excellent in terms of food, service and ambience. Some milky coloured clam soup kicked off our lunch in a promising way. All the 12 pieces of sushi we’d were very good. The quality of the fish was top notch and I liked the sushi rice made with akazu which went very well with the fish. In between sushi, the very friendly chef served us some non-sushi items but the flow was still very smooth. Although there’s a lot of food, we weren’t stuffed because the size of sushi tended to be a little smaller than usual. A very refreshing white peach sorbet ended our meal on a perfect note. A gentleman called a taxis for us. Since it’s still raining, he was so kind as to held the umbrella for us while we’re getting into the taxis. For foreigners like us, lunch is the best can get at Sushi Aso because dinner is members only. That’s what I read from Tabelog and I confirmed with the chef during the course of our meal. He didn’t tell us how we could be a member and I therefore assumed he didn’t want us to join.

This sushi restaurant is in a residential neighborhood with one of the smallest restaurant signage I have ever seen. Perhaps they need to be discreet in a residential area. The architecture is very interesting which really raised my expectation of the quality of the food. Unfortunately I walked away... disappointed. With great sushi, I always expect a graceful chef with great knife skills and perfect timing, the chef fell short in terms of execution. Pieces of sushi were prepared together and when they are served in front of you, some of them fell apart and had to be prepared again. Perhaps the chef had a bad day or perhaps he had the wrong glasses on but the end product on the day was not in keeping with the ambiance and the quality of the ingredients.
