Mekiki-no GinjiBeppuhigashiguchiekimae

When I last stayed in Beppu I ate twice at Mekiki no Ginji restaurant. I had passed it many times because it was so close to the Beppu Station, but this time I went in. The Hokkaido Sardine sashimi bowl was really delicious. With one good experience under my belt, I took two Japanese friends from... Fukuoka and Kumamoto with me two days later. We all enjoyed the food and then went to the station to travel back to Fukuoka and Kumamoto. In a fishing town like Beppu, seafood is judged by its freshness and Mekiki does not disappoint. Even the fish from Hokkaido was top notch. As another reviewer pointed out, the ala carte menu can turn expensive if you order several different items. I found out that one rice dish with sashimi on top is enough for lunch and won't break your budget and if you are interested in eating a bit more, you can have a super fine lunch for 1500 yen. The food is good. Menu provided in English with photos. The staff can speak English. Service is fast. Smoking is allowed, not recommend for allergic people.

Nice looking place with Japanese and western style seating. Menu with some English to accompany pictures of the dishes available. Food served is largely fish based and was well presented and tasty. Shock came when we went to pay - we queried that they had given us the bill for the right table as it ...was much higher than expected. Turned out that there is a 400 yen per person cover charge and both that and the prices on the menu do not include tax. We believe that such cover charges should be made clear before you order (and preferably before you enter) but the only notice was very small and hand written near the till where no one looks when they arrive. Had been planing on going back to try some other dishes tomorrow, but not now.
