“Soba so good”
Nov 18 2025: After a 5km walk from the port on a sunny/windy day, found the signature wooden waterwheel outside the restaurant which was bustling with customers at 1230 on a Tuesday. I sat at the bar counter where you have a good view of the open kitchen action, and scanned the menu (with photos) ...using Google Translate. As per the name, it's all variations on the soba theme so difficult to go wrong - unless you're allergic to noodles of course. I ordered: - Soba with fried chicken and burdock, - black pork with miso, - draft beer. Beer arrived within a minute, noodles within 5. Condiments on the bar counter included the usual chili pepper, that nice grindy japanese pepper whose name I forget, and a wooden tub with slices of pickled daikon. Even a gaijin like me could tell that the soba was seriously organic and special - it actually had a taste - steeped in a gently umami broth Then, wrapped in tempura batter: - the chicken was I suspect Shibushi "black chicken", tasty & quite chewy, - the burdock - well either you like it or you don't... The "black pork" side dish was actually pale white thin ribbons, quite fatty but delicious when combined with the miso and spring onions. The bill was exactly 2000 Yen / 10 quid - for good grub served with Japanese efficiency. Worth a visit - if you're passing by...
