“As authentic as it gets!”
I came across Yamanaka Honten from various reviews and recommendation. The restaurant is near Yakuin station but the entrance is not obvious. The restaurant was full and we didn’t make reservations but waited about 10 minutes. We were seated at the bar and chose a sashimi and sushi set. The sash...imi platter was beautifully displayed and the sushi set came out piece by piece. They take great pride and care to ensure the setting and quality are top notch. The staff were very friendly and the sushi chefs were stern but did a great job ensuring the meal was prim and proper. It was one of the best japanese meals i have had and the experience is worth it. Reservations recommended.

“Haughty, certainly. Prejudiced, apparently. ”
Didn’t get further than the vestibule. The ‘welcome’ consisted of a means test: ¥8k for omakase at a table, not the counter where there was clearly space. No issue with the price but the location was empty and spoke volumes. Worth mentioning my wife is Asian and our experience echoes others where ...an unhealthy predilection has grinned through this venue’s cultured veneer. If in doubt you could try wearing a mask.

“Outstanding finesse a must”
Not easy to find known also as Yamanaka sushi near the Yakuin station. Almost unnoticeable from the street only a very small sign no windows but when you enter the place you are struck by the architecture of the place. Sushis but more than tasty artistically presented and served with utmost personal... attention. Not forgettable but be aware very high prices worth the visit.

“Sushi so fresh and inexpensive (compared to SG)”
The fact that the exterior is so austere, you know you're entering into sacred ground of some serious sushi eating. We were seated at the counter, which to me are the best seats bec you get to the chefs at work. Each sushi is loving prepared and served in lovely plates. If you've eaten sushi omakse ...in Singapore, prices would easily be USD221 and above but here in Yamanaka Honten, our lunch sushi Omakase course was JPY 5,000 (USD46) per set which had 17 courses (including dessert). So pls make sure you get your Japanese friend/concierge to make that appointment for you to avoid being disappointed.

“Sushi/Sashimi doesn't get better than this”
Intimte place - probably 30 seats. Super food, super accommodating service - we were on vegetarian, one child and 4 non restricted diet participants and we were all served to perfection with staff on their toes for us. Food kept coming after we were full, but we kept eating :-)
