“Best value sushi”

The best sushi at a reasonable price. Makes this a great value! I saw a number of people eating without paying and I would gladly volunteer my services to help out if they would like!

“Good seafood tempura”

This is a nice little stall/shop at the end of a small, indoor market, at Hakata Marina. On reading some good reviews, we went in search of this place. We took the bus no.99 to hakata marina and got off at the final stop, near the ferry terminal. This restaurant serves only seafood, of various type...s. You can have tempura (seafood or vegetables coated in flour and deep fried) or seafood in a broth. We had oyster tempura and a very small fish (anchovy?) tempura. The broth was tasty. There is a sushi stall in close proximity selling a whole array from various fish, to sea urchin, to prawns, squid, fish roe etc etc. We were allowed to buy the sushi and eat it at Hakata Toyoichi. Good seafood, reasonable price. On the way back, there was no bus service as the fukuoka international marathon was on and several roads were cloaed. So we walked 1.2km to Gofukumachi subway station. It was a pleasant walk and we burnt some access calories, and also got to witness part of the marathon! Although not Halal certified, the ingredients certainly seemed so.

“This, alone, is worth a trip to the port-side!”

This eatery is a shining example of why first impressions can decieve. As British people, my father and I rocked up at this place for lunch and I was immediately excited to see that there was a little, open cafe at one end of the fish market selling "aradaki soup", which is essentially the fleshy ca...rcasses of fish in a fish broth (a very niche favourite of mine). We picked up some sushi from the counter (which is self-serve) and then went over to the cafe to sit and have some soup/tempura and was immediately scolded loudly for bringing our own drinks in. In Japanese (my university major), I asked whether or not I was allowed to bring the sushi in and, in English, the man replied once again that we were absolutely not allowed to bring drinks in, but that sushi was okay. Feeling a little resentful, we sat down and ordered some tempura from the frosty man behind the counter, who, upon bringing us our meal, asked if we were married (in Japanese). I laughed and replied no and, within a minute, he was quizzing me in Japanese about Brexit, England, and telling me all about the latest British people he'd had in his restaurant. The tempura was delicious and the batter was light, the soup was amazing and, at the end of the meal, he gave my father a free bowl of it without a word. The sushi from the self-serve was absolutely delicious and the guy standing behind the fridges was clearly preparing freshly-caught nigiri all morning every morning. I recommend the uni (sea urchin) - I doubt you'll find much fresher anywhere else! All in all, an incredibly worthy experience and a classic lesson in why it's always worth keeping an open mind when it comes to breaking cultural barriers. The man at the cafe saw us off with an English comment to my father that he loved the Rolling Stones. My father responded "I love the Beatles!" and the former roared with laughter like a maniac. Great place.
