“Tempura Delight”

Reviewed 04/Apr/2019

Looking for a place to eat, we stumbled on one of the tastiest tempura restaurants I have eaten at. A good choice, large portions, good ingredients, well prepared and extremely well presented. You get it all. The restaurant is attractive and clean with staff who are happy, helpful and very efficie...nt. Will visit again, next time in Japan. Excellent and recommended.

“Memorably delicious tempura dinner!”

I'm submitting this review about a year after the fact because I just happened upon a photo of an incredibly delicious dinner I had at Wasai Yakura, and I just have to share. (Photo should be attached.) My friend and I came upon this restaurant after a long and very enjoyable day of visiting Kamak...ura's amazing temples and shrines. We were among the last people at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu as it was closing, and at that point we were a bit tired, a little cold, and more than just a little hungry. Making our way in the general direction of the train station, we just happened to notice, and decided to check out, this cozy little restaurant on the second floor of a building off of Komachi-dori. Feeling pretty famished, I decided to order one of the quite substantial-looking veggie/shrimp tempura dinner sets, which came with little side dishes of tsukemono and tofu and seaweed, a bowl of clear soup, rice, and a small pot of chawanmushi (savory egg custard). The portions were as generous as the menu suggested, and each item was superb. The pièce de résistance though was definitely the tempura. Super fresh, apparently locally grown veggies and large, juicy shrimp in an exquisitely light and crisp batter. I've enjoyed probably more than my share of tempura over the decades, both in Japan and elsewhere, but I must say the tempura at this place distinguishes itself as something particularly special! So next time you're lucky enough to be hanging out in Kamakura around dinner time, do yourself a favor and check out the crazy delish tempura at Wasai Yakura! Really wish I were there and could do the same! :)

“Great food and huge portions”

Good location, relaxed ambience and good service. The tempura is too die for and features local vegetables, fish etc. One word of warning that the portions are large so do not order too much.

“Good food, great service & location, not too pricey”

We ate here 2 nights running, mix of locals, expats, and visitors. The menu had enough variety to suit all of us, and the service was both kind and efficient. We probably sampled everything on the menu over our 2 visits, and I think the restaurant aims for good quality and enjoyable dining rather th...an groundbreaking dishes or presentations.

We enjoyed our lunch here. The place is comfortable. The service is good and the food was prepared and presented very nicely. If your in the area this is a good place to stop in for a nice lunch. Nothing fancy, just good food.
