Found the restaurant by accident. We are quite impressed with the taste of foods. Good value also. Definitely we will go back again.

I have tried several of the restaurants in the refurbished building across the street due West of JR Ueno Station. On the lower level there is a food court, with bakery, noodle shop and hamburger place. The building to the right has regular sit-down restaurants. There, on the 2nd floor, I found ...Kotekichi (written in English on their sign) which serves the Kansai specialty, okonomiyaki. It looks like a pancake, but contains cabbage, onion and typically some protein - meat or seafood. I ordered the "Yamaimo yaki" with a mixture of seafood - the yama imo refers to the Japanese potato used as the base of the batter. I have had okonomiyaki in Osaka restaurants and at kiosks on shrine grounds - all good, but Kotekichi's was absolutely the best! I have to say it was "gourmet" okonomiyaki, even though okonomiyaki is one of the simplest of foods. This restaurant has a full menu of appetizers as well as other variations of okonomiyaki. And the service was very good, and foreigner-friendly.
