“SAKANA SAKANA SAKE TEMPURA TENMARU”
The title is their name for this excellent restaurant. A mouthful which (together with the misspelling here on TA) maybe explains the dearth of reviews. Pity as its tempura is a few notches above the average. So light,so fresh,so tasty. Service with a smile. Will definitely return here on next trip ...to Tokyo.

“Real Tokyo”
I have a real soft spot for TenMaru. I first found it in 2004 listed in the Tokyo Rough Guide. I was on my first trip to Japan and on a tight budget and was so grateful for the inexpensive set meals and non-touristy but friendly vibe. The place has been packed with businessmen whenever we go there (...which is on every trip since), and the food is always great, well presented, cheap and fast. A genuine taste of Tokyo.

“Thin Oily Expensive Tempura”
We were trying our luck, searching for a dinner spot after our first choice recommended by a former local had closed. After being turned away from a few places that were too full, we gave Tenmaru a try. They had plenty of space. We now believe we know why. After ordering the extra special set fo...r 15,000 yen each, we were presented with course after course, some okay (was impressed that they had hirame) but when it came to the tempura it just was not very good. Perhaps the batter was bad, but it barely stuck to the two small shrimp, fish and vegetables. Everything seemed oily instead of crisp and crunchy. Even the sauce was flavorless. Forewarned is forearmed, and four-armed is half an octopus. What else can I say.

“Great Tempura”
The Marunōchi and Shin Marunōchi buildings (close to Tokyo station) each have several floors of restaurants, which makes your choice difficult. We opted for the Edosakana, which serves tempura, and we did not regret. As we did not have a reservation, the four of us were seated at the bar, which make...s conversation a bit difficult, but gives you the possibility to watch the chef prepare the food. We chose a course menu, which saved us from struggling with the selection. The fish, seafood and vegetable tempura is done very nicely, with a mild batter not too heavily applied, and on your plate as fresh as can be. Great place!
