Great atmosphere, great food and drinks, very reasonable prices. Downstairs, medium sized place. Crowded enough to create a happy buzz and warm vibe, but not overcrowded.

My parents were quite disappointed by Kuriya but I thought it was pretty good. We had a little trouble finding it because the google maps location was off by a meter. I will say the "yakitori selection platter" or signature selection that I ordered wasn't for me, because it was gizzard and skin or s...omething and I didn't quite enjoy it

“Not the a real Japanese Dining Experience - a tourist trap”

Having lived in Japan for 2 years in the past, we went in search of an old style Japanese restaurant with a bar and individually prepared varied small plates for our final dinner in Tokyo. Based on the Tripadvisor reviews for Kuriya, we booked a table for 5 (3 adults, 2 teens). When we entered th...e basement restaurant, it felt warm, lovely and quiet with wood paneling on the walls. Then we looked around and noticed that there were only tourists at the other tables. Hmm... The menu was good and we ordered a large variety of small plates. The quality went from poor (octopus balls - the oil was stale) to a fantastic dish of 3 oysters grilled in miso. In between were fried rice and yakatori skewers and a respectable asparagus/ham dish. At some point, the server set down 5 small cups of potato salad that we hadn't ordered but he placed them as a gift (so we assumed). We also had desserts. When the bill came, we looked at it because we were dividing it among 2 families. We were charged 1900 Yen (Y380 times 5) for a dish we didn't recognize so we asked. We were told it was for the "appetizer" - the potato salad we didn't order - and that was the policy of the restaurant and the charge wouldn't be reversed. We looked more closely and the there was also a 10% fee added onto the entire bill. That is a HUGE NO-NO in Japan. There is no tipping and no tax on restaurant food unless it's specified on the menu. It made us wonder exactly who wrote all those rave reviews we read here. Kuriya was the most disappointing meal of our entire trip because it felt so out-of-sync with the Japanese culture we know and love.
