“Food was so salty, tourist trap”

1
Reviewed 28/Oct/2024

The place looked busy so we thought we would try it. Poor service, food was slow to arrive. It was very very salty, barely edible. We ordered the king crab for 9800 yen and it was so salty, complete waste of money. The salmon was so dense, dry and salty. We were served our food without any cutlery s...o had to keep asking for utensils etc. waiters would bring our food out on trays and there was clearly not enough space yet they would just stand there with the tray of food for you to take without helping make space at all. Overall, uncomfortable setting, poor service and more importantly the food was terrible.

“Deceiving and dishonest mandatory table charge for mandatory appetizer”

1
Reviewed 29/Mar/2024

First time eating here at Asakusa as the menu looked fairly enticing. Little did we know there is a mandatory table charge of 430 yen per person. This was never disclosed to us when we sat down or after we ordered. 10 minutes into us sitting down, the server brings over 3 little sardine fish, 3 litt...le fish sticks, and 3 tiny fish balls for us to grill. We told the server we did not order it and asked if it is on the house/complimentary. He just said it is an appetizer as his English is non-existent as my Japanese. After we ate, when we paid the bill for the 3 of us, we noticed 3 charges of 430 yen totaling 1290 yen plus tax 10%. We asked them what it is and the cashier then said to us it is MANDATORY TABLE CHARGE!!!! I do not mind paying for it but it is the principle of the matter. Tourists and diners should be advised of this mandatory table charge per person either on the menu or in person and they should also have it on the table ???!!!! Instead, how they charged it is very deceiving, dishonest practice, underhanded. I would like to warn all diners before hand of this mandatory table charge so it does not come as a surprise like how we found out.

“Very tasty eels!”

This is a lively and informal place which serves a good range of Japanese staples. You order from an iPad sitting on a charger at your table (as is now very common in Japanese cities). I had the grilled eel, sesame pickled cucumbers and some squid tempura. The squid was just ok, but the eel was abso...lutely delicious. Service was efficient and friendly and the entire meal cost only ¥3000

“Excellent seafood grill and great atmosphere”

This is a restaurant where most of the dishes come prepared ready for you to cook on the gas grill on the table. We arrived around 8pm on a Wednesday and were able to get the last free table at that time, but the turnover is fairly quick so I guess we would not have had to wait too long otherwise. O...nce seated you order using a tablet at the table which I noticed had been well disinfected, along with the table, condiments etc while they were setting the table. The tablet had options for English and some Asian languages. We opted for prawn skewers (5) and a whole squid, along with a crab & miso cold dish, chilli bamboo shoots and a sea grape salad, downed with a beer and a red wine (nice but slightly grape juice-y according to MrsExPunk). While not speaking much English (why should they) the staff were very helpful in explaining timings for the grilling. The quality of the seafood was excellent and prompted us to order another round of prawns plus a plate of what I can only describe as fish fritters - strips of white fish dipped in a light egg batter. Everything was very tasty and the whole bill came to about ¥6000. The place had a great feel - very lively and fun, and was mostly filled with Japanese patrons.
