“Appealing To The More Adventurous”
We all have our "goto" spots. Places we want to keep secret from outsiders so we do not have to wait in line for a table if we just happen to drop by. With the end of my work assignment in Japan, I am revealing Umami as one of those places. We aere very fortunate to stumble upon this place as it is... located in a non-descript back street in the first floor of an apartment building. Most successful Japanese restaurants will have a standardized menu built on past success and a couple of specials. Umami is different and will appeal to the more adventurous. The maitre d' is quite knowledgeable on sake culminating last year with the production of their own branded sake. There is always a list of at least a dozen selections of varying characteristics. The chef was formerly worked in a Tapas restaurant but desired to bring those skills to more Japanese themed dishes. The combination usually makes for a fanatastic culinary experience. One night it might be a smoked salmon salad where they hand smoked the salmon themselves. Another night, house made fish cakes. A new delicacy to try each week but if you had a favourite, it will disappear over time. If you do not like surprises, this isnot the place for you. The restaurant is small and intimate so a good choice for a romantic evening or just quiet reminiscing with an old friend. They staff are welcoming of English speakers and although not fluent, can usually help you out if you do not speak English
