Yoshino

Since emerging on the NYC dining scene almost a year ago, Yoshino has established itself among the absolute top two or three sushi restaurants in the city, without question. The prices are high, but the chef’s incredible skill, in addition to the warmth and generosity of the service make the experi...ence well worth it (and I’m not normally one to spend $500 on a meal). It really is a special place—as close to Japan as you can get without actually flying there—and a great mixture of tradition and elegant innovation. In any other major world city, this restaurant would have 2 Michelin stars from the start, but the Michelin guide’s price criteria mean that this restaurant, at least for now, unjustly gets lumped in with 1-star sushi joints that well-informed diners *universally* agree aren’t on Yoshino’s level. In other words, Yoshino is still kind of a hidden gem—try to get a reservation before it becomes a “regulars only” kind of situation, which is probably where this place is headed!

Wonderful sushi where mostly locals go to eat. Reservations are very necessary. Received bib gourmand. Great sushi for the price.
