“Lovely and delicious dinner”

We had the pleasure of enjoying dinner at Akasaka Totoya Uoshin last week and had a wonderful experience. From the moment we walked in the door we felt warmly welcomed and looked after. We sat at the counter overlooking the prep station so we could watch as each dish was lovingly prepared. Every ...course was both beautiful and delicious with even the little details (seasonally chosen dishware and garnishes) being perfect. The staff explained each dish, and gave helpful tips on how best to eat some items--a welcome touch for those not familiar with the nuances of Japanese dining. It was a very memorable dinner, and certainly worthy of the accolades.

“don't order grilled fish”

1
Reviewed 17/Apr/2017

Grilled fish is my favorite Japanese meal. If the fish is grilled properly, it brings out the original favor with a bit charcoal on the skin. 魚新 is famous for the grilled fish lunch and it's also a Michelin one star restaurant. It was a total disappointment. Sawara (鰆) is a seasonal white fish in sp...ring. Either cook at home or eat out at a French , the fish is full of favor, soft and tender. I really don't know how 魚新 grilled the fish, it was dry and very flat favor. Apparently they use lower grade fish without much fish oil to save cost. The same kind of fish caught at different part of Japan can have differences. Not to mention the freshness. My wife ordered a trout which was also dry and lack of any favor. Maybe the restaurant is good at other dishes otherwise it can be a Michelin in such a competitive market. If you go there for grilled fish, I highly recommend to search for another one. By the way, rice and miso soup is good.

“This is what real food is about”

We can't say enough about Totoya Uoshin. We have been to many Michelin-star restaurants in tokyo and this is a stand-out in many respects. While the atmosphere is more austere than in some others, the experience is by far the most honest, authentic and heart-felt expression of Japanese cuisine that ...we have ever come across. The chef, who was a previous fish-monger, knows his fish...and he knows how to prepare it. Everything is very carefully thought out, laid out and presented. They made sure that we knew exactly what we were eating at every step of the way, which is not always easy in a city where communicating is often complicated. And while the food was simply brilliant, they also went well out of their way to makes us feel very welcome and at home. Do yourself a favour and make a reservation.
