“Really good underrated izakaya with great oden, yakitori, and sushi options”

During my February 2026 Japan trip, I tried many izakayas, and honestly a lot of them were fine but didn’t really suit my taste. But thankfully, Torasuzu—which is really close to Sensoji Temple—perfectly fit what I wanted and had some of the best food I had all trip, which is saying a lot since I... was in Japan for a month. This is a two-floor izakaya. My party and I ended up eating on the second floor, and I’m kind of glad we did because it gave us more time to talk to ourselves. When we went, we were the only party on the floor, so we didn’t have to worry about annoying other customers with our conversation. It’s also a restaurant where you order via a QR code on your phone, which I like because it’s easier to keep track of what you’ve already ordered conveniently. My party and I went because we just wanted some really good oden. In that regard, Torasuzu definitely did not disappoint. There’s a set with a lot of the typical stuff you expect in oden—like daikon radish, hard-boiled egg, meat, fried tofu, fish cake, etc.—and I thought just about all of it was really good. The oden broth had that excellent light but flavorful dashi that I love so much, perfect for the late-winter season when we went. However, we also ended up getting a few orders of yakitori—more specifically, chicken thigh and chicken skin—and they were really good, easily the best yakitori I had all trip. It’s possible there are places with better ones, but after being disappointed by a few spots I’d been to (like Torikizoku), I much preferred it here at Torasuzu because it was much fresher-tasting and juicier. They also had some sushi and sashimi options, and honestly those were really good too—tasted really fresh, despite not being a sushi-specific spot. I’m not much of an alcohol drinker but will occasionally drink casually with people I’m comfortable with, and we decided to get some here. I got a green tea highball—it didn’t even taste that alcoholic; it just pretty much tasted like green tea, which is exactly what I wanted. If you want an all-around great izakaya—especially if it’s oden season or if you just want really good yakitori and surprisingly good sushi—I highly recommend Torasuzu. If you’re in the Sensoji Temple area, this place is really close to the temple, so don’t skip out on it if you can!

“Some basic options for boring Aussies”

Husband and I aren’t adventurous Japanese food diners. He ate crab which he found dry and salmon which was deep fried and oily. I had chicken thigh skewers and corn fritters amongst other things. My favourite was the chicken tempura. Probably not a menu for the basic westerners. Service was nic...e enough and a sign shown to us that 480 yen would be the entre and or cover charge. Prices were ok and service was fast. We didn’t have to wait for a table at 6.30pm on a Monday.

Avoid avoid avoid . There were 5 of us that sat down to have a drink and only one ordered food and one of the party didn’t have anything and went off shopping . It was 530¥ for a beer then charged each of us ¥450 for sitting at a table even the one person that didn’t order anything. This wasn’t comm...unicated and there was no signage . The manager was rude and even tried charging us for things we didn’t have . The food wasn’t great either . He tried telling us this was law in Japan we have been I. Japan a few days and we have never Ben charged excessive amount . Stay away .

“Awesome Izakaya!”

My partner and I had an awesome meal and drinks at Torasuzu. The staff were friendly and really helpful. As there wasn't an English menu, instead of turning us away the staff helped us with our order and were very patient as we used the menu of their website and translated it into English. A young w...aiter from Taiwan (unfortunately I didn't catch his name!) was especially helpful! Also the food and sake was great!
