Matsuo Genghis Khan Shinchitose Airport

During our one week visit in Hokkaido, I avoided genghis khan type meal as there are so many delicious foods to eat and I love seafood specially the way Japanese make it. However at the airport, I decided to give it a try just before leaving. As another reviewer has mentioned, the meat was heavily m...arinated in a sweet marinade so we couldn't get the taste of the lamb. Also the vegetables started burning because of the sugar in the marinade. At $25 per person it's not cheap either. You do get unlimited amounts of rice and miso soup but then it's the meat that we wanted to get the taste of. Do not recommend !!

We just arrived New Chitose airport late from Osaka because of snow. We missed the train to Hakodate and decide to have lunch at the New Chitose airport. We found this place by chance and decided to try Genghis Khan BBQ which was famous in Hokkaido. The set lunch was quite reasonable in term of pric...e and portion. The mutton BBQ was quite good and tasty. Recommened.

I didn't get to try Genghis Khan in Sapporo city and was happy to see this in the airport terminal. With an English menu, this is a convenient place to try the Hokkaido dish (it's also open at 10am unlike most places in the city that only open in the evening). The portion was a bit small for the p...rice but fans of lamb meat would enjoy the Hokkaido specialty.

After spending a week in Hokkaido, eating seafood every day, we decided to have Genghis Khan, as Lonely Planet lists this as a specialy dish in Hokkaido, before flying out of the Shinchitose airport. Apparently there are two types of Genghis Khan, one with marinated meat and one with plain meat. Wha...t we had was the former, and indeed the meat was so heavily marinated, we couldn't taste the meat at all. I don't think this is a dish worth trying in Hokkaido, where there are plenty of other good dishes, and also when it was quite pricy for what you get.
