“Extremely good!!!”
I write about te place on the 11th floor in Kyoto-eki too but got a totally different impression than my predecessor. It was my 3rd time in this restaurant (every time more or less by chance) and each and every time I was amazed not only by the taste of the cuisine but also by the friendly waiters ...and the overall service-orientedness of the staff. Also the price was quite reasonable for a yuba-kaiseki-restaurant. I am a very experienced connisseur of Japanese cuisine and can only wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant for anybody who likes Japanese cuisine!

“Maybe just poor management or need a new chef?”
I am writing about the Shozankaku Matsuyama restaurant at the upper floor (10 or 11?) of the Kyoto train station. We were looking to have a nice exquisite meal (at a higher price) and this place offered a great view of Kyoto. My mother and I had been traveling in Japan for 10 days and thus far had...n't been disappointed with Japanese food until this restaurant. We are very open to many foods and eat just about anything served so we ordered the chefs selection which is many courses. We had this type of meal a number of times already at various restaurants and enjoyed it. The sashimi and the desert (cooked fruit) were good. The rest were either not prepared very well (such as the tempura which was better everywhere else we tried) or too bitter tasting (like the miso soup), too many unusual things (like this funny pasty thing or this milky looking bowl of slimy stuff), or too salty and overcooked (like the grilled fish), or too plain tasting (like the soup with the fish tail)... Overall, for it was ordinary and non-satisfying compared to meals 1/4 the price at other places. In addition, the service wasn't the greatest. They would give us the next dish before finishing the one we we still had and they wouldn't take finished dishes. They didn't seem very happy there and near the end we were wishing we never came... I hope this message gets to them so they can take a serious look and correct the dissatisfying experience as it doesn't represent the greatness of Japanese food and culture we have come to enjoy during our visit.
