“Kaneyo claims to be the #1 Unagi in all of Japan”
And, by the lines forming on weekends at this hillside shop on the border of Shiga and Kyoto, you might be inclined to think it's really top-notch and worth the wait. But, truth be told, the unagi (freshwater broiled eel) is only average at best. Kaneyo's style is to place a huge tamagoyaki (rolled ...egg omelette) on top of the rice to fill up your tummy. Even the shop itself is tired on the inside, which is why I only give it two stars. The tare, or sauce, is more salty than sweet. If you're looking for a really awesome unagi nearby, Chikasada ちか定 along Lake Biwa would be my recommendation.
