“Closing just after we arrived, not enough customers.”
Sadly we didn't get to enjoy this place despite trekking to find it. Either the guy wanted to go home early (despite advertised closure time in writing of 01.00) or there wasn't enough cuatomers. Great.

“Excellent French-style dinner.”
I was staying at the Monterey Hotel, in the neighborhood. I came across Brasserie Vapeurs by chance, ate there and found the restaurant, food and service just excellent. So excellent that I went back one day after and everything was as excellent as the first time. I very much recommend it.

“A little piece of France in downtown Kyoto”
My wife and I found this restaurant a couple of blocks down the street from our hotel. We saw it on our first night, ate there on our third and, with friends, ate there again on our fourth night in Kyoto. It was sensational. The food was fantastic (particularly the smoked salmon), the wine list was ...sensibly put together and very reasonable and the staff (including the owner and his wife) were very engaging and helpful. The most extraordinary thing though is that the restaurant looks like a classic French bistro despite no-one connected with it ever having been to France. The owners are planning to visit France in 2016 for the first time. Despite never having been there, they have created a little piece of France in Kyoto. The only things that give it away are the chopsticks on the table and the assumption that dishes are shared. We loved the place as did our friends who joined us on the second night. Between us, over the two nights, we had probably four different starters and four different mains. and they were all great. As I said above, the smoked salmon was a knock-out and I am not a great fish eater. The only negative is that the restaurant is quite small. There is room for about 10 at tables and 4 or 5 at the bar, so call first.
