Ichijoh Higashimukidohri

There are no signs of English on the outside of this izakaya, however this should not put you off if you want a genuine japanese experience. Until now there are no English reviews on TripAdvisor and despite the number of foreign tourists in Nara, we seemed to be the only foreigners there on the nig...ht.This is part of the charm of the place. Recommended as her personal favorite izakaya by the young lady at reception at our hotel, this was a great choice. Despite the lack of english on the outside, there was an English translation of the drinks and food menu. The izakaya has open and closed booths as well as about 10 counter seats. It was very busy (8pm on a Saturday night) so we ended up on the counter, a great spot for watching everything. The food is a wide range of japanese classics from tofu and sashimi to steak and chicken gizzards (and everything in between). We ate sashimi, chicken skewers, grilled tuna salad, tuna rolls and fried chicken. The food is good and plentiful. There is an extensive drinks menu (both non-alcoholic and alcoholic) including beer, wine, sake and cocktails. The place is busy and vibrant, and great fun for people watching, The staff are very friendly and speak some limited English. It is also great value for money. Highly recommended.
