Kagonoya Tachiba

Many people assume you have to go to Motomachi or Minato Mirai to enjoy a proper afternoon tea, but I visited Kagonoya Tateba, a Japanese restaurant conveniently located next to Totsuka subway station in Izumi Ward, Yokohama. Kagonoya is a family-style restaurant known for sushi, steak, tempura, an...d especially high-quality shabu-shabu made with premium domestic beef. Although it’s a casual place, it offers private rooms and a calm atmosphere. I tried their Afternoon Tea Plan (¥3,000), which is exclusive to this location and available only on weekdays until late September 2025. Soft drinks like tea and coffee are all-you-can-drink, and you can add unlimited alcohol for an extra ¥1,100, though this set is really best enjoyed with tea. The first tier included savory bites like smooth chawanmushi, cute temari sushi, chilled pumpkin and okra, steamed chicken with citrus jelly, and tender simmered eggplant. The second tier featured skewered rice dumplings you can toast yourself at the table—crispy outside, chewy inside, with sweet mitarashi sauce or kinako. The third tier was all about Morihan matcha, from a Kyoto tea maker established in 1836. Highlights were a peach bavarois cake, rich matcha tiramisu, hot sesame balls filled with smooth red bean paste, and delicate matcha warabi mochi. Finally, the matcha opera cake was elegant and deeply flavorful—a perfect finale. Kagonoya may be a family restaurant, but it feels a step above, offering refined Japanese dishes. If you’re curious, this special afternoon tea is only available at this branch, and only for a limited time. Highly recommended—make a reservation while you can!
