“My choice of maid cafe in Osaka”
Maidreamin is one of the most popular maid cafes in Japan and the chain has 2 stores in Osaka: Nanba and Nippombashi Ota Road. Perhaps there is an auto-translation error due to same kanji as the title of this store should not be “Nihonbashi” which is in Tokyo. The Nanba store is bigger and therefo...re hosts most of the Osaka Maidreamin events and promotions. This store, Nippombashi Ota Road, is a bit smaller with a capacity of around 20 guests. I prefer this store as the smaller store allows for easy conversation with your friends, staff, and even other customers if you wish. I drop in on occasion when I’m in Osaka and the staff does an amazing job of remembering me. Mind the system when you arrive as you are charged per hour on top of whatever you order. Maidreamin is high-energy compared to most maid cafes and you can order things like live performances. Ask to see the “live list” if you’d like to know what songs the staff can dance. Keep in mind these will be mostly in Japanese and you can just ask for a maid’s favorite or recommended song if you aren’t sure. Typically it’s Maidreamin original songs, anime songs, idol songs, and vocaloid songs. The maids who like K-pop will likely learn a few of those as well. There’s even one maid at this store, Myako, that knows NSYNC. It’s common before showtime for the staff to upsell with things like lottery pulls or, in the evening, shots. It’s fun if you’re into it however rest assured that these are optional. Maidreamin is extremely approachable for newcomers and foreigners. Especially because they typically allow ordering on your phone via QR code which has an option for English. Also, while they have the usual omelette rice, curry rice, etc. they also have seasonal menus which actually have some pretty delicious offerings. My go-to advice is not to think too hard about all the cutesy stuff and just participate for the novelty of it. No need to feel embarrassed or hesitant as I’ve seen all walks of life in Maidreamin; big business groups, solo guys, solo girls, foreigners, locals, people with zero Japanese ability, and all ages and types you can think of. If you’re hesitant on kawaii culture, I advise going Monday-Saturday after 8pm. From 8pm-closing the cafe concept changes to more of a bar focus called Maidreamin Hyper where you can order all-you-can-drink (alcohol included) and there is somewhat less focus on the “moe moe kyun” stuff. The local Legend Maid (assistant manager) is Shampoo (yes as in the hair soap. She will not let you get her name wrong or forget it). You can tell it’s her by the gold buttons, more detailed uniform, and good English. She always works very hard and all the staff do a wonderful job.
