Kamui

We are so glad we found Kamui on our first night in Kyoto: we hard a dinner we will never forget, in an easy-going, friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and it was one of the best meals we had during our three weeks trip in Japan. The restaurant has an English menu and special dishes which are prepare...d on the spot. There is a very large selection of sakè that you can order à la carte or (as we did) following the chef’s recommendation. We tried several different things (mixed sashimi, deep fried tofu with local spinach, marinated squid, grilled eel, squid and seasonal veggies tempura, horse meat sashimi, fried bonito) and everything was so delicious and fresh that we will never forget the experience. We were surrounded by Japanese customers (single eaters, families, friends, etc.) and everybody was extremely friendly and welcoming, including the staff who smiled at us for the whole evening. We highly recommend!

No no and one more time no. Of the 10 servings we ordered, only one was edible (the simplest rice). All other portions were simply terrible, it was impossible to eat them. I have never eaten anything so terrible in my life. I don't recommend this place.

We were walking back to our hostel from the International Manga Museum. It was getting late and we were quite hungry. We were using google maps and happened to see a place mentioned on there. The building was slightly confusing because there are several eateries, and we were definitely looking for t...his one. It is on the second floor and around towards the right back corner. It says Izakaya-kamui. When we entered the owner(?) or manager (?) was so friendly! She told us right away there was no English menu, but that was just fine with us. They seemed surprised we found them and that we stayed. We asked her to serve us what she recommended, and we were so glad we did. Her English was very good, and she took great care of us, even asking if we had any allergies. My friend can not eat pork, and she did great to bring seafood dishes and explain how to eat the different courses she brought. She even showed us the names of the different sushi fish on a translator program. It was a wonderful experience. I had trouble finding the place to review on here. I think that is probably because it is a very local place and does not receive many tourists, but I was delighted by the whole experience. She said it was a quiet night, and she was very glad we stopped in. The food was very fresh, beautiful in presentation. There was one course that was some type of miso paste cooked on a leaf with oysters and served with fresh raw cucumbers. It was sooo delicious. All the courses were very good. We paid about 40.00 for an alcoholic beverage and five courses.
