“Wonderful, delicate and thoughtful food....”
This quirky restaurant is on a side street near the Heian Shrine. French-cum-Japanese cuisine in a modest room with a handful of seats by a brilliant chef (who previously worked in Illinois and Australia). We were there on a Sunday evening for dinner and basically got a tailored fixed menus; one ...guest was vegetarian with mushroom allergy and a carefully designed meal was provided, It was not cheap by our standards but an amazing, memorable experience; perhaps the best meal I had during my whole Japan trip. I cannot give it a higher recommendation.

“Delicious Food and Great Service”
This is a cute cafe located about a block from the Heian Shrine. We stopped here for lunch. They have some lovely furniture and a super clean bathroom. They serve shrimp/mushroom gratin, curry with rice, Thai-style fried chicken, ham and cheese panini with soup, and french fries. They have some de...sserts, including pancakes. They also sell coffee, tea and soft drinks, including juice. We ordered the fried chicken and the curry. The service was friendly and fast, and the food was fresh and delicious. The woman who owns this cafe, whose name is Yumi-san, speaks excellent English. This is a great place to visit if you are in this area.

“Excellent lunch”
Just had a delicious lunch. Excellent service. Down a side street, so was a very lucky find. We didn’t have to wait as we sat outside on the tree shaded veranda, but customers following had a short wait. Not a large menu, but will suit most tastes.

“good for small groups”
After walking around all day, rokujian was great for a lunch break. Close to the Hein-jingu Shrine. Excellent food, small house but spacious dining place, away from the crowds outside and a huge sturdy table in the middle fitting at least 6 people comfortably.

“A better than avearage Japanese coffee shop”
I feel the average coffee shops in Japan are not so good, so set your expectations correctly. I found this little gem while walking around Kyoto aimlessly. It seems to be a little off the beaten path, but makes for a good pit stop if you're in the area seeing one of the temples close by or if yo...u're on a bike. What I liked about this place and why it's better than average: -They have free WiFi! -It's not a chain. You don't feel like you're in a plastic cut of starbucks. -It's a clean, well designed space. -They have an English menu, but I don't think the staff speaks much English. -The coffee was tasty. -The place is relaxing. I didn't order any food, but I a few plates of their pancakes. They looked amazing. If they taste half as good as they looked, they should make a good compliment to the coffee. www.rokujian.com
