“One of the great restaurants of its kind”

This is a Keiseki Japanese cuisine based on local products, beautifully prepared and presented on mostly local ceramics of the very finest quality. The pictures do not do this justice at all. The service is impeccable (with competent English) and despite the two Michelin stars' hype, the atmosphere ...and service is sincere, helpful and friendly (all are family members it seems) and the price surprisingly reasonable. The course of choice IMO is the "regular" menu and not the Hida-Beef one. The Hida-Beef is excellent, very fatty and marbled and may be too rich for some (it tastes nothing like prime Beef but is quite on its own category). But you do not need such a restaurant to taste this (I tried both courses). Not only is the food exquisite, and plates ,bowls and cups worth photographing, but the house and rooms are beautiful, looking out into smaller or larger gardens. There is really nothing left to be desired, the cooking is so simple yet refined. On my evening the best dishes were - the clear silky soup with a tempura vegetable, aromatic and rich; a fried trio of corn, ginkgo nuts and crisp fish liver; A perfectly grilled Ayu sweetfish (all fish served is local, hence sweet water); A succulent chicken with intense flavor and smokiness. The walk to and from this place takes you through an interesting corner of Takayama with small streets and alleys.

I don't consider this restaurant pricey for what they delivered. This was not only a top end meal experience. The setting is serene and exquisite. The service and welcoming extraordinary. The meal worth every penny. Don't eat there without having the HIda beef which I found superior to Kobe! We w...ould go back in an instance!

One of the best meals of my life - for 13,000 yen (around £75), you get an exquisite 11 course meal (originally apparently it was 30 courses - which I can't even imagine) in a private room where you'll imagine you're an Edo lord. The view and ambiance are brilliant. The service is super friendly and... attentive. It's done in an old Edo era house - a museum piece in itself - with a garden just outside of the leaded glass windows. You remove your shoes and sit on tatami and just get 11 courses of top quality gorgeous food that you want to take photos of rather than eat.
