“Tempura on tap.”
We were recommended to visit this place by the ever helpful desk staff at the Nagoya Hilton so we gave it a go. The taxi dropped us off at the Midland Building by Nagoya Station and I was sure he was wrong as it looked just like an office block. There were two security guards inside so we went in an...d looked lost. I showed one of the guards the name of our restaurant written down in Japanese that the hotel had given us and he just pointed to the lift and put four fingers up. And there it was! Like most department stores/office blocks in Japan, it had a whole floor of restaurants. We took our reserved counter seats and had a great view of the chef cutting and frying our food. First he showed us the raw plate of what he was going to cook for us and the tempura party began. We had a wide selection of light, crispy fried fish and vegetables and a few glasses of cold chardonnay to help us on our way. The chef also gave us a tray of sauces and some green salt and told us which one to use for each course. One memorable course was a really long, thin fish, a bit like an eel, which he filleted and deep fried for us. The next course was a little surprising as he took the spine and deep fried that for us too (see photo). Sounds uncool but it was a bit like pork crackling that tasted of fish. Mrs Harry didn’t eat hers. A bit expensive in the end but good for a treat on our last night in Nagoya before we took the bullet train back to Tokyo the next morning. Sayonara Nagoya, konnichiwa Tokyo.
